UW System Women and Science Program
Promoting excellence and diversity in STEM education
We envision a future in which education in the STEM disciplines is accessible and attractive to diverse students resulting in STEM fields enriched by diverse practitioners. The mission of the Women and Science Program is to attract and retain more women and minority students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by promoting systematic changes in the ways that science and science education are regarded and carried out within the University of Wisconsin System, the Wisconsin community and beyond.
In particular, the program seeks to:
- increase faculty expertise in inclusive and student-centered pedagogy;
- promote science education that includes analysis of the social context in which science is practiced;
- provide role models of women and minority STEM professionals, scholars, and educators;
- promote campus & classroom climates that attract and retain women and minority students in STEM disciplines; and
- foster collaborative communities for UW System STEM educators and students.

The Spring Conference provides an opportunity for STEM educators and administrators to come together to share best practices and present recent findings about teaching to a diverse student audience. read more
Every fall, the Women and Science Program brings new educators in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) together for a 2-day workshop. Workshop sessions focus on student-centered pedagogies, classroom and campus climate issues for underrepresented students, and active learning strategies as they apply to STEM. read more
Spotlight on Teaching and Learning
The WEMS Program at UW-Platteville receives the Claire L. Felbinger Award for Diversity.
Started more than 20 years ago with one part-time staff person. Now, it is situated within a larger department called EMS Student Success Programs with four full-time staff, a study center, a pre-college outreach component, and a college student retention component. Both the pre-college and the college student retention factions have the ultimate goal of developing a more diverse and balanced workforce. read more
